4 Popular Varieties Of Kratom

One of the most remarkable qualities of kratom is the plant’s sizeable diversity. Because the leaves of the mitragyna speciosa tree are cultivated in several distinct regions and are harvested in numerous ways, many varieties of kratom exist.

The diverse nature of kratom creates a broad spectrum of consumer choice –– but it can also be overwhelming for first-time buyers. With similarly named strains like Red Thai and Green Thai available, customers often have a difficult time differentiating between varieties.

So, to help mitigate some of the confusion and narrow down your options, we’ve assembled a list of four of the most popular kratom options!

Red Bali: A Ubiquitous Classic

Red Bali

Considered to be a “classic” kratom strain, Red Bali is a consistent favorite among kratom advocates. As a red strain, Red Bali’s leaves are harvested at peak maturity, and the resulting finely-ground powder is typically a dark, earthy brown color.

It has been speculated that red-veined strains such as Red Bali contain higher concentrations of alkaloids such as mitraphylline and 7-hydroxymitragynine, which are thought to possess sedative and analgesic properties.

As Red Bali’s name suggests, the strain originates from the Indonesian island of Bali. Indonesia has established kratom cultivation and exportation as a popular business niche. Red Bali remains an abundant and consistent favorite within the United States and elsewhere.

Green Maeng Da: Premium Grade Kratom

Green Maeng Da

Anyone researching kratom online will inevitably stumble across the Maeng Da varieties of kratom. But unlike other strains, “Maeng Da” doesn’t refer to a region of origin. Instead, it purportedly signifies the high-quality nature of a grower’s product.

As a green-veined strain, Green Maeng Da is generally considered to be “middle-of-the-road,” and embodies the traits of both red and white-veined kratom. Like many other kratom strains on the market, these distinctive characteristics are likely due to variations in the strain’s alkaloid composition.

Because “Maeng Da” doesn’t suggest a specific area or region of cultivation, Maeng Da varieties of kratom are often sourced from numerous plantations across Southeast Asia. Most kratom is grown and harvested within Indonesia and Thailand, making those two countries the most plausible sources of most Green Maeng Da on the market. However, less prominent kratom farms within other countries may also contribute to the surplus of Green Maeng Da that finds its way into America.

White Borneo: Fresh From The Borneo Rainforests

White Borneo

White Borneo is a white-veined kratom strain. As its name implies, White Borneo is typically imported from the island of Borneo. Although Borneo strains aren’t nearly as prevalent as Maeng Da or Bali varieties of kratom, they still enjoy popularity with kratom users across the globe and are commonly available.

As the third largest island in the world, the warm, humid rainforests of the Borneo region provide the mitragyna speciosa tree with plenty of room to grow and thrive. However, despite these ideal growing conditions, the deliberate cultivation of kratom is generally only common within the island’s Indonesian borders, which make up about 73% of Borneo’s total landmass.

Green Malay: Leafy Green Malay

Green Malay

Green Malay is a green-veined kratom strain supposedly sourced from the Malaysian region of Southeast Asia. When ground, its leaves have a light, earthy green appearance –– hence the name.

Like Green Maeng Da, Green Malay is generally known for its well-rounded characteristics and is thought to possess qualities of both red and white kratom strains. Although research on the differences between kratom strains is limited, it has been suggested that green-veined varieties of kratom such as Green Malay contain higher amounts of mitragynine (MG), but a lower concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG).

A consensus regarding Green Malay’s region of origin is difficult to reach. Although the strain’s name suggests Malaysian roots, due to restrictions on cultivating kratom in Malaysia, this strain is often grown and harvested in neighboring countries such as Indonesia.
