What is Kratom?
Kratom is the common name for Mitragyna speciosa, a tree native to Southeast Asia. In the marketplace, the term kratom usually means whole-leaf material that has been harvested, dried, and milled into a fine powder, or left as crushed leaf. It’s sometimes packed into capsules, or blended into other formats.
Because it’s a plant product, kratom contains a mix of naturally occurring alkaloids. Mitragynine is typically described as one of the more prominent alkaloids in the leaf, while 7-hydroxymitragynine can show up at low or trace levels in botanical kratom.
What is 7OH?
If you’ve been asking what is 7OH, the simplest answer is: 7OH is a shortened way to refer to 7-hydroxymitragynine, an alkaloid that can be present in kratom leaf in small amounts. While 7OH does occur naturally in kratom leaves, it can also be produced or concentrated into artificial products that deliver much higher 7OH levels per serving.
This is where 7OH vs kratom gets confusing: A 7OH label may erroneously say “kratom extract” while the product behaves very differently than traditional leaf products because the alkaloid profile is no longer “leaf-like.”
You’ll also see 7OH discussed as a metabolite in scientific literature, meaning the body can form 7-hydroxymitragynine from mitragynine under certain conditions.
Kratom vs 7OH in Composition
Whole-leaf kratom is a broad botanical matrix. Even when it’s finely milled, it still reflects the chemistry of the leaf.
7OH-focused products, by design, tend to narrow the focus. Some products aim to deliver a bigger 7-hydroxymitragynine “hit” per unit than you would ever expect from plain leaf powder. That gap is one reason the term “7OH effects” can be so inconsistent online. People aren’t always talking about the same category of product.
A recent study illustrates this mismatch. Products labeled as “kratom extracts” were found with high 7-hydroxymitragynine levels and comparatively low mitragynine, along with inconsistent chemical profiles across products.
