When we talk about kratom strength, we mean one measurable thing: how much mitragynine a batch contains. An independent lab reports that number as a percentage of the powder’s dry weight, called MIT % (mitragynine percentage). Our Mit Strength Scale sorts every batch into one of four tiers based on that result alone.

MIT % describes what’s in a batch. But it doesn’t tell you how much to take or how a product will affect you, and this guide doesn’t cover that either. When trying kratom, always know your personal limit and remember the adage “start low, go slow.” So while this guide won’t explain how much kratom to take, we’ll be discussing all things MIT %: What the number means, how we assign tiers, and why a strain’s vein color alone is a poor stand-in for a lab result.

What Is Mitragynine?

Mitragynine is the most abundant alkaloid in the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, the tree kratom comes from. Research summarized by University of Florida scientists puts it at roughly 12% to 66% of a leaf’s total alkaloid content, depending on where the tree grows.

Kratom leaf contains dozens of other alkaloids, including small natural amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH). Our comparison of leaf kratom and concentrated 7-OH products explains why those two categories are treated so differently.

What Is MIT Kratom? Reading the Percentage

“MIT” is shorthand for mitragynine, so MIT kratom simply refers to kratom described by its tested mitragynine content. A mitragynine percentage of 1.50% means mitragynine makes up 1.5% of the powder’s dry weight.

To turn the percentage into milligrams, multiply it by 10. A batch at 1.50% contains 15 mg of mitragynine in each gram of powder, and a batch at 1.26% contains 12.6 mg per gram. That’s a measure of concentration, the same way a nutrition label lists grams of protein per serving without telling you how much to eat.

How Strong Is Kratom? Why Labels Don’t Answer It

Names like Maeng Da, Ultra, or Super suggest a ranking, but there’s no industry standard behind them. Vein colors aren’t graded for alkaloid content either. Identically named products from different vendors, or even two batches from one vendor, can test differently.

That variation is built into the plant. Published reviews link kratom mitragynine content to growing region, tree genetics, leaf maturity, and season, and studies cited in the same research summary measured bulk leaf samples between 0.80% and 2.38%. Without a lab result, a product label is a guess.

Our Mit Strength Scale: Four Kratom Strength Tiers

A raw percentage like 1.27% or 2.66% is hard to interpret on its own. The scale converts each result into a tier so batches are easier to compare:

TierMIT %Where Products Usually Land
MildUnder 1.36%Lighter plain-leaf powders and capsules
Standard1.36% to 1.64%Most plain-leaf kratom
Elevated1.65% to 1.99%Plain leaf that tests above the typical range
High2.00% and upExtracts and enhanced blends

A higher tier isn’t a mark of better kratom. Mild and High batches go through the same testing and quality standards. The tier only reports where a batch’s mitragynine content falls.

How a Batch Gets Its Tier

  1. Lab testing: A sample from each batch is sent to an independent lab whose accreditation meets the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard.
  2. One number: The lab reports mitragynine as a percentage of dry weight.
  3. Tier assignment: That percentage decides the tier. Nothing else is factored in, including strain name, vein color, or price.
  4. Posting: The product page shows the MIT %, the tier, a gauge, and a Download Lab Results button. Scanning your order’s QR code pulls up that same report.
  5. Retesting: Every new batch is tested on its own. If a new batch lands in a different range, the product page updates to the new tier.

Because tiers follow the batch, it’s worth checking the lot number on your bag against the report. Our lab testing overview explains the rest of what a report covers.

Why Vein Color Doesn’t Predict Kratom Strength

A common assumption is that white vein kratom sits at one end of a potency range, and red or green at the other. Our lab results don’t line up that way. For example:

ProductVeinMIT %Tier
White Vein IndoWhite1.26%Mild
Green Vein Maeng DaGreen1.79%Elevated

(Visit our Transparency Hub for full lab results for our other strains. Results reflect the current batch for each product and change as new lots are tested. Check the product page for the latest report.)

Comparisons within one origin show the same pattern. Our August 2026 Thai results put the green lot at 1.52% (Standard) and the red lot at 1.34% (Mild), a full tier apart. Vein color tells you about harvest timing and drying, which we cover in our white vein guide and our red vs. green Thai comparison. It doesn’t tell you the tier.

If you prefer a particular vein, use the Type filter on the scale page to narrow the list, then look at each product’s tier.

What MIT % Doesn’t Measure

Kratom mitragynine content is one useful data point, not a full profile. The scale doesn’t measure:

  • Quality or freshness: Those depend on handling, storage, and testing for contaminants, which every batch goes through regardless of tier.
  • Other alkaloids: The tier is based on mitragynine only.
  • Individual response: A percentage can’t predict how any one person reacts.
  • Serving amounts: The scale isn’t dosing guidance, and we don’t provide any recommendations. The amount of kratom you should take is always up to the individual.

Using the Slider and Compare Tool

Our Mit Strength Scale page has two tools, built around third-party lab data for every Kratom Spot product:

  • Shop by strength: Drag the slider handles to set a mitragynine range, then filter by Tier, Type, or Format. Every product shown has a lab-tested MIT % inside the range you picked.
  • Compare two products: Tap Compare on a product, or type in the MIT % from any lab report, including another brand’s. The tool places both results on the same scale so you can see how they line up.

The compare tool is handy for checking kratom strength across brands when another vendor lists a percentage without context. If a brand doesn’t publish one at all, that’s useful information too.

Kratom Strength FAQ

What Is a Typical Mitragynine Percentage for Kratom Powder?

Most plain-leaf kratom we test falls between 1.36% and 1.64%, our Standard tier. Results above 2.00% usually come from extracts or enhanced blends rather than plain leaf.

Is a Higher MIT % Better?

No. A higher percentage means more mitragynine per gram, nothing more. It isn’t a quality grade, and every tier meets the same testing standards.

What Is Considered a High Dose of Kratom?

We don’t give dosing advice, and our High tier isn’t a dose. It describes the concentration of mitragynine in a batch. Questions about amounts belong with a healthcare provider, especially if you take medication or have a medical condition.

Can a Product Change Tiers?

Yes. Tiers are assigned per batch, so a product can move up or down when a new lot is tested. The product page always shows the current batch.

Does “Ultra” Mean a Product Is in the High Tier?

No. Ultra is part of a product’s name. Its tier comes from its lab result, like every other product.

Where Do I Find a Product’s MIT %?

On each kratom powder and capsule product page, next to the strength gauge. You can download the full lab report there or use the batch QR code printed on your package.

Kratom Strength Means MIT %

Kratom strength, as we report it, is a lab-measured mitragynine percentage. The tier tells you where a batch falls on our scale. It doesn’t depend on vein color or product name, and it isn’t advice on how much to use.
